Fungi on the outside of a tree is a sign that rot has set in within the roots, trunk and branches.
Sometimes, you will see mushrooms growing in a neat row on the ground, which is a sign that the root underneath has rotted, which affects how well the tree is anchored to the ground. Oyster shelf mushrooms or other fruiting bodies growing on the outside of the trunk or branches is a sign that the rot may have begun years ago - and the fungi is just now working its way to the surface.
As with all trees, do a load test - both straight down and to one side -- to make sure the tree will hold your weight. Then, especially when fungi is present, hit the trunk of the tree with a rubber mallet several times to see if it sounds hollow inside. |
