Rope Care

The most important rule for ropes is to not take them for granted.

Your life does depend on them.

Be careful while you are using them and in between jobs, maintain and inspect them.

In the tree, keep sharp objects away from ropes. Even if a rope is barely touched with a chain saw or handsaw, it can cause a nick that over time can lead to failure.

When a rope is not in use, keep it in a rope bag. Take out only the length you need and leave the rest in the bag. This protects the rope from being damaged by tools, UV light and dirt articles that can weaken it.

To maintain ropes:

    • Inspect them for breaks, cuts, abrasion and melted or fused fibers each time they are used.
    • Clean them periodically to remove dirt and grit. One way is to rinse them with a garden hose in a large tub and allow them to air dry. Don't use solvents, bleach or a harsh detergent and never use heat to dry them. Mild soap or laundry detergent can be used.
    • Remove excess twists before storing them. Flake or coil the ropes loosely and store them in a dark, dry place.
